Solstice

Solstice is a fictitious makeup brand that works towards destigmatizing skin texture in the makeup community. This is done through its acne-safe makeup products, textured packaging, and non-blurred photography. The three products included: the body balm, body stick, and body pencil, were created as tools to reinspire the artistry of makeup.

Thesis Statement

"The stigma around acne damages and diminishes young adults mental health and social confidence. Cosmetic companies benefit off of the insecurities blemishes cause, pushing the desire for clean makeup products that work towards aiding acne prone skin. However, the beauty industry has left a gap by failing to offer products that empower individuals to embrace their natural skin while simultaneously providing the confidence-boosting, acne-safe makeup they desire."

Problem

Acne effects 5.6 million Canadians. It’s the most commonly treated skin condition, yet over half of females with acne cope by covering it with makeup. For those with acne prone skin, most makeup products
use comedogenic ingredients. These are ingredients that can cause further clogging of pores, creating a vicious cycle.

Inspiration
History
  • Ancient Egyptians thought acne was the physical embodiment of lying.

  • Romans thought they could wipe acne away by watching a shooting star.

  • Elizabethans thought acne was a sign of witchcraft and hid it with led paint.

This project is dedicated to my younger sister and my younger self. Acne is the most common skin condition treated in the world, so why is it that we feel so isolated when dealing with it. I know the negative effects the beauty industry can have on the cycle of acne first hand, and it was when I stopped feeding into the daily-use of makeup, that I notice my skin was at it's peak health.

Summary

By creating products that aren’t promoted to hide or fix textured skin, Solstice can begin the process of destigmatizing acne within the beauty community. Makeup consumers have to get use to the idea of seeing acne or textures in relation to makeup, so by adding texture to the packaging, we are slowly
breaking down the mental barriers related to textured skin. Beyond texture, Solstice’s branding and products are created to go against the products that other makeup companies are creating. Designing products to enhance the artistic experience of makeup users, instead of encouraging the damaging cycle of daily use products.
